Welcome to the Dragon Community: Brent Thompson

Brent Thompson is Minnesota State Moorhead's new executive director of Grants and Sponsored Programs. Brent oversees grant search and management for Moorhead in an effort to create more opportunities for student relief in regards to tuition and student costs.

Q: What drew you to Minnesota State Moorhead?
A: After three years living in Florida, I decided it wasn't my place. I saw the job opening and it matched my background working with nonprofits and grants, which made me think I could offer some expertise and put that knowledge to work.

I was also born and raised in North Dakota and most of my family lives in the area. So, it just seemed like the right place to go. 

Q: What surprised you about Minnesota State Moorhead?
A: The turkeys (laugh), there are so many of them. Seriously, I've really enjoyed the people and the energetic vibes on campus. There's an uplifting community and a lot of positive energy around it.

Q: What's your go-to productivity trick?
A: I think, organization. I don't know if it's a trick or just a lesson I learned early in life. I save so much time and energy by being organized.

Q: What's your favorite place to eat in the Fargo-Moorhead area?
A: Ninja Ramen Poke Bowl; poke has become my favorite thing over the past few years, because I can make it the way I want it.

Q: What's one thing people might not know about you?
A: People would be surprised by my taste in music. I have an eclectic taste, Ilike old school country, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, John Prine and Dolly Parton.

Q: What's the craziest thing you've ever done?
A: I bungee jumped in Germany and, at the time, it was one of the biggest ones that you could do.

Q: What's the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
A: My dad always used to tell me to never be the smartest guy in the room. Always be open, willing to listen to what other people have to say, humble enough to accept their ideas, and understand that everyone has their expertise. That's been something I've held on to.
