Welcome to the Dragon Community: Kellam Barta

Kellam Barta is MSUM’s newest area director for residence life in Grantham, Nelson, and Holmquist Halls. He connects with students and provides leadership support for student staff.

Q: What drew you to work at Minnesota State Moorhead?
A: This role is a perfect fit for my background. I taught for 10 years at NDSU, and I have a background in residential treatment with teens, as well as behavior modification. I also really like the fact that MSUM is a close-knit community.

Q: What is something you are excited about when it comes to starting this new role?
A: I am most excited about meeting the students when they come back in the fall. That’s what it’s all about – getting to engage with students on a regular basis and getting to teach and learn new things with them.

Q: What is something that surprised you about MSUM?
A: The turkeys – just seeing them wander around here;, it’s awesome.

Q: What is your key to having a productive workday?
A: Staying organized, prioritizing tasks, and honestly just getting a good night’s sleep is key.

Q: If you could create a national holiday, what would it be and why?
A: I would say national election day, so that everyone would have the opportunity to vote and not have to worry about getting off work or going before or after.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?
A: Cooking and running are necessary hobbies for me. In addition to that, I like to write and play a lot of music.
